Studying in FranceCampus France Niger in 2027: what is still possible since the closure

Information checked on 2 November 2026.
Key point first. As of 2 November 2026, the French embassy in Niger is closed until further notice, and Niger is no longer among the 75 countries and territories of the Études en France procedure published by Campus France. The Campus France Niger website is still online, but its latest calendar dates from 2022-2023. There is therefore no Campus France Niger campaign for the 2027 intake today. This guide takes no side: it says what official sources confirm, what they do not say, and what you can do right now.

| Consular assistance to French nationals | No longer provided on site | Diplomatie.gouv.fr, travel advice updated on 10 September 2026 |
| Services for French nationals in Niger | Partly transferred to the French embassy in Togo | Same ministerial answer |
| Études en France procedure | Niger is not on the list of 75 countries and territories | Campus France, checked on 2 November 2026 |

The answer of the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs to written question no. 14222 is clear: the embassy is closed "given serious obstacles making it impossible to carry out its missions". It details the services transferred for French nationals, but says nothing about visas for Nigerien nationals. No official page consulted states, as of 2 November 2026, where a student living in Niger can lodge a visa application for France.
What the Campus France Niger website still shows
The website still presents the office as "within the Centre culturel franco-nigérien Jean Rouch", with a phone number (+227 92 18 56 84), an address (campusfranceniger@gmail.com) and opening hours. It mentions no closure. But its calendar stops at 2022-2023, and Niger is no longer on the official list of Études en France countries. Write before travelling or paying anything, and pay nothing without a written answer. Do not rely on an old tutorial describing the Nigerien procedure from before 2023.
What is not possible from Niger today
- Applying on Études en France from Niger: the procedure only covers students living in one of the 75 countries and territories on the list, and Niger is not on it.
- Lodging a visa in Niamey: the embassy is closed, and no official source consulted announces a substitute location for residents of Niger.
- Relying on an intermediary who promises an appointment or a visa for a fee: only a consulate decides on a visa.
What remains possible
1. Apply directly to institutions
Outside the procedure countries, a student applies directly to the French institution, following its calendar. This is the normal route for master's programmes, schools and non-connected programmes. Our article Campus France or direct application explains what you can apply for directly, and the pitfalls of private schools. For first-year bachelor's, the demande d'admission préalable remains compulsory for non-Europeans; in a country without the Études en France procedure, it normally goes through the French embassy, which blocks Niger as long as the embassy is closed. An admission is not a visa: without a place to lodge it, it is not enough to leave.
2. Apply from a country where you legally reside
The rule of the French diplomatic network is to lodge your application "at the visa centre you depend on", in practice the one in the country where you live. If you genuinely and legally live in another country (residence permit, enrolment at a local university), it is the French embassy or the Campus France office of that country you should ask. Several neighbouring countries are in Études en France: our guides Campus France Togo, Campus France Benin and Campus France Senegal describe their procedures. A mere address is not enough: residence must be proven, and a false statement weakens all your future applications. Check with the embassy concerned before committing.
3. Write to the competent diplomatic post
Ask in writing: to the Campus France Niger office, and to the French embassy of the country where you live. Ask exactly where a long-stay study visa application can be lodged in your situation. Keep the answers: they protect you, not rumours.
4. Aim for another destination
- Belgium: no Campus France, admission is requested from the institution; our guide to scholarships to study in Belgium (ARES, WBI, VLIR-UOS) covers funding. Check where to lodge the Belgian visa with the competent representation.
- Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Togo, Benin: according to the Campus France mobility sheet (November 2024), these are already major destinations for Nigerien students, with Togo and Morocco in the lead. The AMCI scholarship (in French) funds studies in Morocco.
- Turkey: the Türkiye Bursları scholarship (in French) is open to African students; our comparison of scholarships in Turkey, Morocco and Egypt helps you choose.
- Canada and Quebec: our guide to scholarships to study in Canada and Quebec.
All scholarships open to Nigeriens are gathered on our page scholarships for Nigeriens (in French), with email alerts before each deadline. Campus France Niger itself promoted the Ashinaga scholarship (in French), open to Nigeriens.
5. Study remotely
Several French universities award degrees at a distance, and the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie offers degree programmes; our page AUF: distance degree programmes (in French) presents them. Distance learning does not give a visa, but it moves your path forward.
Prepare your file now
The groundwork is never wasted, whichever route opens:
| To prepare | Why | Where to get help |
|---|---|---|
| Study plan and cover letter | Every application, direct or not, asks for them | Cover letter for a scholarship |
| Certified transcripts and diplomas | Institutions require them from the application stage | Your secondary school or university |
| French level | The 2026-2027 DAP notice lists Niger among countries where French is the sole official language: its nationals are exempt from the TCF for first-year bachelor's | Campus France French test |
| Valid passport | Without it, no visa application | Nigerien administration |
A TCF exemption for the DAP is not an exemption everywhere: for a master's, the institution sets its own requirement.
Mistakes to avoid
- Paying an agency that guarantees a visa or an appointment: Campus France works with no intermediary, and only a consulate decides.
- Buying proof of resources or accommodation: a forged document leads to refusal and may lead to prosecution.
- Declaring a fictitious residence in a neighbouring country.
- Letting your papers expire: valid passport, certified transcripts and diplomas, so you can apply quickly when a route opens. The resource threshold for a first student visa is €877.50 a month, according to Service-public.fr; our guide to proving your resources details the proofs.
For those already in France
The embassy's closure does not take away the residence permits of Nigerien students already settled: renewals are handled in France. The Campus France mobility sheet counted 1,033 Nigerien students in France in 2023-2024, 44% of them women, and 427 study visas issued in 2022.
Staying connected with the Nigerien diaspora
Those who have already left remain the best source of practical information. On Compatri, the Nigerien diaspora page brings together communities of Nigeriens living in France, Belgium and elsewhere: join the one in the city you are aiming for and ask those who live there. The volunteer mentors from the diaspora also answer about the studies they followed, and Niger's Republic Day, on 18 December, gathers the diaspora every year.
Compatri is not a service of Campus France or of the French State, and does not replace the official source: only the information from Campus France, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and France-Visas is binding.

Frequently asked questions
Is Campus France Niger open in 2027?
As of 2 November 2026, no campaign has been announced. Niger is not on the list of 75 countries in the Études en France procedure, and the office's website shows a latest calendar from 2022-2023. Write to campusfranceniger@gmail.com before taking any step and pay nothing without a written answer.
Does the French embassy in Niger issue student visas?
No. The French embassy in Niger is closed until further notice, according to the ministry's answer published on 30 April 2024 and the embassy website. No official source consulted gives a substitute place of application for residents of Niger as of 2 November 2026.
How can a Nigerien study in France?
By applying directly to French institutions and, if you legally live in another country, by going through the French embassy or the Campus France office of that country. Write to the competent diplomatic post to find out where to lodge a visa in your situation. An admission alone is not enough without a place to lodge the visa.
Can a Nigerien go through Campus France Togo or Benin?
Only if you genuinely and legally live in that country: each office handles students who live there. A mere address is not enough, and a fictitious residence weakens all your applications. Check with the office and the French embassy of the country concerned before committing.
Which scholarships are open to Nigerien students?
Several scholarships remain open to Nigeriens, including Ashinaga, AMCI for Morocco and Türkiye Bursları for Turkey. Compatri's page of scholarships for Nigeriens gathers them, with email alerts before each deadline.
