Burundi falls under the Campus France "Études en France" procedure: to study more than three months in France, a student living in Burundi goes through the platform and the Bujumbura office. For first-year bachelor's, the prior admission request (DAP) closes on 15 December 2026, the national date for the 2027 intake. Campus France Burundi has not yet posted its 2027 calendar: its calendar page still shows the 2023-2024 one. This guide gathers what the office and the consulate publish: the conditions, the 400,000 BIF fee, the compulsory interview, then the visa application at the French embassy in Bujumbura. For the general logic of the platform, see our complete guide to Campus France.

Conditions for further study in France

Campus France Burundi sets a clear threshold for entry into higher education:

  • over 50% in the state exam and holding the state diploma, or a pass certificate if it has not yet been issued;
  • meeting each programme's admission requirements and prerequisites;
  • holding, or completing, a suitable degree in the LMD system: a master's candidate must at least have completed a bachelor's.

For language, the DELF or DALF (B2 minimum) is recommended to improve your chances. A French test is strongly recommended, and may become compulsory if you did not complete all your secondary schooling in a French-language school. The Institut français du Burundi language department has information on sessions. Our article on the Campus France French test covers accepted tests.

The procedure in 5 steps

1Create your account on Études en France, choosing the Campus France Burundi office. The activation link sent by email expires after 24 hours.
2Complete the file: photo, ID, CV, background with transcripts and diplomas (certified French translations where needed), language skills, motivation for each programme.
3Pay and submit: the office checks the file is complete, then validates it after payment.
4Attend the interview.
5Receive the answers and apply for the visa.

Documents to prepare

For first year: CV, report cards from the last three years of secondary school, pass certificate or state diploma, mark sheet, and any French certificate. For second year to master's: CV, state diploma, transcripts for all university years, university diploma or enrolment certificate. For those admitted outside the platform: the admission or enrolment letter, on top of these documents.

The Campus France interview in Bujumbura

One rule to remember: an unjustified absence cancels the application, with no refund of the fee and no possible rescheduling. If you cannot attend, tell the office in advance. Our guide to the Campus France interview lists typical questions.

The student visa from Burundi

Once you have the prior admission, the application is filed at the consulate of the French embassy in Burundi, according to the sheet Campus France Burundi published in February 2026.

1Create a France-Visas account. The passport must expire at least three months after the end of the visa requested.
2Fill in the application online, copying the passport details exactly, then print the form and the list of documents.
3Book an appointment on consulat.gouv.fr, on the French embassy in Bujumbura page. The appointment is free.
4File in person: arrive 15 minutes early. The visa fee, the equivalent of €50, is paid on site, in cash and in Burundian francs.
5Collect the passport on the date given when you file.

Compulsory documents: signed form, compliant photo, passport and copies, prior admission and Campus France receipt, latest diploma (original and copy), flight pre-booking, proof of accommodation in France, proof of funds.

Four tips from the consulate: file preferably in May, June or July, as August is very busy; allow one to two months of processing; a final-year pupil admitted to first-year bachelor's can only file once the state diploma is obtained; additional documents requested must be sent within 15 days.

Funds: the February 2026 sheet asks for an irrevocable transfer of €615 per month for 12 months, with a sponsorship certificate from the guarantor (preferably a close relative) and supporting documents. That amount predates the raised threshold: according to service-public.fr, you must now show €877.50 per month. Check the current list on France-Visas before making the transfer. Our guide to proving your funds details the evidence, and the one on the student visa application the whole file.

Campus France Burundi stresses that it cannot intervene in the visa decision, and that no agency or third party should be paid for an appointment.

Scholarships and plan B

The French embassy publishes France Excellence calls relayed by the office. Our page on French embassy scholarships (in French) explains how they work, and the page of scholarships open to Burundians (in French) gathers other programmes, with alerts before each deadline. If every answer is negative, our tips after a Campus France rejection help you bounce back.

Arriving with the Burundian community

Before filing, the Campus France simulator (in French) places a file for free; its thresholds come from Beninese admits and only give a rough idea for Burundi. On Compatri, the Burundian diaspora page gathers communities city by city, and every 1 July Burundi Independence Day brings compatriots together in the diaspora. Joining the community of your future city is free, even before universities answer.

Compatri is not a Campus France or government service: only information from Campus France Burundi and the consulate is binding.
