For a student living in Benin, the French student visa starts with a stamp: the one Campus France Benin puts, at its Cotonou offices, on your prior enrolment agreement (API, accord préalable d'inscription). Without that signed and stamped document, the visa application cannot go ahead. This guide follows the process in order: the France-Visas form, the Capago appointment, the documents, the funds of 877.50 euros a month, fees, timelines, refusals, then validating the visa on arrival in France. For the application stage before that, see our Campus France Benin guide; for the general version, valid in every country, read applying for a French student visa.

Capago in Cotonou: the submission centre

Capago describes itself as the official visa centre of the French embassy in Benin, and its exclusive representative for collecting applications. It receives files and fingerprints; it decides nothing, the embassy's consular section examines the application.

Four practical rules:

1Book online: only applicants who went through the booking are received. Capago then sends a link to its portal; you have 72 hours to pay the service fee, otherwise the slot is cancelled.
2Come in person, 30 minutes before the time. Suitcases and travel bags are banned, and phone use may be restricted.
3Under 18 when you apply? A parent must accompany you, or a guardian holding a delegation of parental authority.
4Foreign national living in Benin? Bring your residence card.

Capago also points out that it is the only company mandated to receive applications: beware of middlemen reselling slots.

Documents for the French student visa from Benin

The list published by Campus France Benin for the appointment includes:

1the printed France-Visas receipt and form;
2the API, signed and stamped by Campus France Benin;
3proof of accommodation in France;
4proof of financial support, with the original irrevocable transfer certificate (AVI) if you have one;
5a copy of the passport;
6any other document you consider useful to your file.

When you fill in the form, France-Visas generates the exact list of supporting documents for your situation: that list is the one that counts. Capago offers compliant ID photos and photocopies on site, for a fee.

Funds: 877.50 euros a month

Since 1 August 2026, the minimum to prove for a student visa is 877.50 euros a month, or 10,530 euros for twelve months. Watch out: Campus France Benin's visa page still shows the old threshold of 615 euros a month. Calculate on 877.50 euros and check on France-Visas the exact amount requested when you apply.

Converted at the fixed CFA franc parity (1 euro = 655.957 FCFA), the monthly threshold is about 575,600 FCFA, and a full year about 6.9 million FCFA. Possible proof: scholarship certificate, support from a guarantor with proof of income, bank statements, or an irrevocable transfer certificate. Campus France Benin stresses two parts of the file: accommodation and the financial guarantor. Good practice for this part is in proving your funds for the student visa.

Fees and timelines for the student visa from Benin

Long-stay visa, student through Campus France50 euros (about 32,800 FCFA)At the centre, on the day

Home delivery of the passport8,000 FCFA, optionalAt the centre
Campus France fee (already paid)70,000 FCFABefore 15 November 2026
VLS-TS validation in France100 eurosOnline, on arrival

At the centre, Capago accepts cash and bank cards, and issues a receipt for every payment. The visa fee stays with the embassy even if the visa is refused. Optional services change nothing about the decision: they make the visit more comfortable, not the file stronger.

As for timelines, France-Visas asks you to allow at least 15 days between lodging a long-stay visa application and your departure date, a delay that may grow depending on the period. Summer concentrates student applications: book as soon as your API is stamped, then follow your application in your online account. You will be notified when the passport is ready; a third party can collect it with the power of attorney handed in on the day of submission.

Visa refusal: what blocks and how to respond

The consular section alone decides. What it examines is well known: sufficient and credible funds, consistency between your background and the chosen programme, accommodation, authenticity of documents. Three mistakes keep coming back in Beninese files:

1A budget based on 615 euros a month, the old threshold still shown here and there.
2A poorly documented guarantor: a certificate without statements or proof of income proves little.
3Doubtful documents: Campus France Benin warns that a false statement or a forged document can lead to a visa refusal and prosecution. Your school reports issued after 2019 must also be verifiable on Educmaster.

If you are refused, you can appeal to the commission for appeals against visa refusals, in Nantes, within 30 days. The details, and what to fix before reapplying, are in what to do after a student visa refusal. Compatri does not give legal advice.

On arrival: validating the VLS-TS

The visa issued is a VLS-TS marked « étudiant » (a long-stay visa that serves as a residence permit), valid from four months to a year. You must validate it online on the ANEF website (France's digital portal for foreign nationals) within three months of arrival, paying a 100-euro fee; some pages still show an older amount, rely on service-public.gouv.fr. This permit also lets you work 964 hours a year. When it expires, a residence card takes over if your studies continue. The step-by-step process is in validating your VLS-TS.

Preparing to leave with those who went through Capago

Official lists do not say how many days it took this summer to get a slot in Cotonou, or which document the counter asked for. Beninese students settled in your future city know. On Compatri, you can join their community before you even apply for the visa, from the Beninese in France page, as explained in joining your community before you leave. The « African students » group also brings together those leaving the same year.

Compatri is not a service of Campus France, the embassy or the government, and does not replace the official source; Compatri is not a visa agency either.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you apply for a French student visa in Benin?

At Capago, the official visa centre of the French embassy in Benin, in Cotonou (Jummy Palace Center building, avenue Steinmetz). Submission is by appointment, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 4 pm, after filling in the France-Visas form. French government scholarship holders can submit without an appointment from 11 am to 1 pm.

How much does the French student visa cost in Benin?

Allow 32 euros in Capago service fees, paid online by card to confirm the appointment, then 50 euros in visa fees at the student rate, paid at the centre on the day. Add 100 euros on arrival to validate the VLS-TS. Capago services such as premium (29,500 FCFA) remain optional.

How much in funds for a French student visa from Benin?

At least 877.50 euros a month for applications lodged since 1 August 2026, or 10,530 euros over twelve months, about 6.9 million FCFA. Campus France Benin's page still shows the old 615-euro threshold: do not build your budget on it.

How long does a French student visa take in Benin?

France-Visas asks you to allow at least 15 days between lodging a long-stay visa application and departure, a delay that grows in busy periods. Add the time needed to get a Capago appointment, longer in summer, and the prior signature of the API by Campus France Benin.

What should you do if your student visa is refused in Benin?

You can appeal to the commission for appeals against visa refusals, in Nantes, within 30 days. Before reapplying, fix what may have blocked you: funds based on the old threshold, a poorly documented guarantor, a mismatch between background and programme, a doubtful document.
