For a student living in Senegal, the French student visa starts with an e-mail: the one from Campus France Senegal announcing the end of your Études en France procedure (Études en France being the online platform of Campus France, the French agency for international students). Without it, no visa application is possible. Then come the France-Visas form, the filing at VFS Global in Dakar, the decision of the Consulate General of France, and the validation of the visa in France. This guide follows the journey in order: the steps, the role of VFS, the documents, the €877.50 monthly funds requirement, fees, waiting times, refusals, and what the Franco-Senegalese agreement on migration flows changes, or does not change, for students. For the application stage, see our Campus France Senegal guide; for the general version, valid in every country, read applying for a French student visa.
From the Campus France e-mail to the visa: the steps
| Step | Where | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Final choice, before 31 May 2027 | Études en France | Accord préalable d'inscription (prior enrolment agreement) |
| 2. Any additional documents, before 30 July 2027 | Études en France, Campus France office | File closed |
| 3. End-of-procedure e-mail | Inbox | Right to apply for the visa |
| 4. Visa form | France-Visas | Form and list of documents |
| 5. Appointment assigned | E-mail from VFS Global | Filing date |
| 6. Filing and biometrics | VFS Global, Dakar | File sent to the consulate |
| 7. Decision and collection | Consulate General, then VFS | Passport with the visa |
Steps 1 to 3 happen on Études en France. Campus France Senegal describes them as follows for connected programmes: you validate your final choice, download the prior enrolment agreement, add any requested documents before the campaign closes, then receive the end-of-procedure e-mail. If you were admitted off the platform (Parcoursup for a BTS or CPGE, a non-connected private school), you first go through the "Je suis accepté" (I have been accepted) tab, between 1 April and 15 July 2027, paying the 85,000 CFA franc fee.
The student visa campaign runs from 15 May to 27 August 2027, according to the Campus France Senegal calendar. The earlier dates are detailed in our Campus France Senegal 2027 calendar.
VFS Global, the provider for the French student visa in Senegal
In Dakar, the Consulate General of France entrusts the reception of visa files to VFS Global. Campus France Senegal confirms this on its July 2026 page about alumni visas, which points to the VFS Global Senegal website for appointments and filing. VFS receives the documents and takes fingerprints; it decides nothing. Only the consulate rules.
A Senegalese specificity worth knowing: the VFS appointment module states that students in the Campus France procedure do not need to book an appointment. VFS sends them an e-mail assigning a slot once the procedure is complete. Two consequences:
Another useful point: the Consulate General in Dakar does not answer visa questions by phone, as its contact page states. Go through France-Visas and VFS. And beware of any intermediary selling a "fast appointment": for a Campus France student, the appointment comes from VFS, with nothing to buy.
Documents for the French student visa from Senegal
The exact list comes out of the France-Visas form, which adapts it to your situation: the French Embassy notes that the visa wizard shows the documents to attach and the applicable fee. In general, expect:

Funds: €877.50 a month, about 575,600 CFA francs
For applications filed since 1 August 2026, service-public.fr sets the minimum funds to prove for a student visa at €877.50 per month. As the CFA franc has a fixed parity with the euro (€1 = 655.957 CFA francs), the calculation does not depend on the daily rate:
| Period | In euros | In CFA francs |
|---|---|---|
| One month | €877.50 | about 575,600 CFA francs |
| Twelve months | €10,530 | about 6,907,000 CFA francs |
Common proof: a scholarship certificate for scholarship holders (French government, Senegalese government, France-Senegal programme); otherwise a sponsor's commitment with their bank statements and income, or statements of an account in your name. The old threshold of €615 a month no longer applies: a file calculated on that basis starts with a handicap. Good practice for this part is in proving your funds for a student visa.
Fees and waiting times for the student visa from Senegal
| Item | Amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Long-stay visa, reduced Études en France rate | €50, about 32,800 CFA francs at the fixed parity | Rate for files processed by Campus France |
| Long-stay visa, full rate | €99 | For comparison |
| VFS Global service fee | Given by VFS | Not refunded if the wrong category is chosen |
| Campus France fee (already paid) | 85,000 CFA francs | Paid at SUNU Bank |
| VLS-TS validation in France | €100 | service-public.fr |
The VFS service fee does not appear on the official pages we were able to check: verify it in the VFS e-mail or on its website before the appointment.
As for waiting times, the French Embassy in Senegal points out that an application can be filed up to six months before departure and that appointment and processing times vary with the season. For a student, the real benchmark remains the 15 May to 27 August 2027 campaign: the sooner you finish additional documents on Études en France, the sooner the end-of-procedure e-mail arrives, and the sooner VFS assigns you a slot. A file that drags on until 30 July puts you at the heart of the August rush.
Visa refusal: what blocks and how to react
The consulate has access to your academic file and remains the sole judge. What it examines is well known: sufficient and credible funds, consistency between your background and the chosen programme, accommodation, authenticity of documents. On that last point, Campus France Senegal does not compromise: any non-authentic document leads to five years of ineligibility for the Études en France procedure.
If refused, the decision must state reasons for a student. Before any court appeal, a prior appeal to the Commission de recours contre les décisions de refus de visa (the French visa refusal appeals board) is compulsory, within a short time limit. The details, and what to fix before reapplying, are in what to do after a student visa refusal. Compatri does not give legal advice.
The 2006 Franco-Senegalese agreement: what it changes for students
France and Senegal signed in Dakar, on 23 September 2006, an agreement on the concerted management of migration flows, supplemented by an amendment of 25 February 2008. The text, published by the French Senate with the ratification bill, includes a student section. What it actually provides:
- housing: a recommendation by the French authorities for a room in a university residence, reserved for certain categories of students whose file went through the Campus France office in Dakar: French or Senegalese government scholarship holders, school-leavers from a French lycée in Senegal, students admitted to a preparatory class in a French lycée, among others;
- residence for scholarship holders: France undertakes to facilitate the issue of a residence permit to Senegalese government scholarship holders;
- work during studies: a work authorisation "under the conditions provided by its legislation", i.e. ordinary law;
- after graduation: the two countries "agree to study the possibility" of linking a residence and work authorisation, for a graduate with at least a master's, to employment priorities and a commitment to return. It is not an automatic right;
- salaried employment: the 2008 amendment provides an "employee" permit issued without an employment-market test for a list of occupations annexed to the agreement, a list that can change every year.
In practice, ordinary law applies to the vast majority of Senegalese students, and the agreement changes neither the Campus France procedure nor the funds threshold. Service-public.fr also states that nationals of a country that has signed a migration-flows agreement with France may request a temporary residence authorisation for a first professional experience: ask the préfecture when the time comes. The ordinary routes after graduation are in our article on switching from student to employee status.
On arrival: validating the VLS-TS
The visa issued is normally a VLS-TS marked "étudiant" (long-stay visa serving as a residence permit). You must validate it online on the ANEF website (France's digital immigration portal) within three months of arrival, paying a €100 fee, according to service-public.fr. This permit also lets you work 964 hours a year. The step-by-step process is in validating your VLS-TS.
For later, Campus France Senegal mentions a scheme for graduates: Senegalese holders of a French master's or equivalent degree, living in Senegal, can benefit from a facilitated procedure for short-stay visas, through the France Alumni network.
Preparing departure with those who went through VFS
Official pages do not say how many days VFS took last summer to send appointments, or which document the counter asked for. Senegalese students settled in your future city know. On Compatri, you can join their community even before filing your visa, as explained in joining your community before you leave, and find in the "African students" group those leaving the same year.

Frequently asked questions
Where do you file a French student visa application in Senegal?
At VFS Global, the provider for the Consulate General of France in Dakar, after filling in the France-Visas form. VFS receives the file and takes fingerprints; only the consulate decides. Students in the Campus France procedure do not book themselves: VFS assigns them an appointment by e-mail.
How much money do you need for a French student visa from Senegal?
At least €877.50 per month for applications filed since 1 August 2026, i.e. about 575,600 CFA francs a month and €10,530 (about 6.9 million CFA francs) for twelve months, thanks to the fixed parity of 655.957 CFA francs to €1. A scholarship, a sponsor or an account in your name can prove it.
How much does the French student visa cost in Senegal?
The long-stay visa costs €50 at the reduced rate for files processed by Campus France, about 32,800 CFA francs at the fixed parity, against €99 at the full rate. Add the VFS Global service fee, given by the provider, then €100 to validate the VLS-TS in France. The 85,000 CFA franc Campus France fee is paid earlier.
When should you file your student visa in Senegal for the 2027 intake?
During the student visa campaign, from 15 May to 27 August 2027, as soon as you receive the Campus France end-of-procedure e-mail. The sooner you finish your final choice and additional documents, the sooner the VFS appointment comes. An application can be filed up to six months before departure.
Does the 2006 France-Senegal agreement make the student visa easier?
Not for the procedure itself: Campus France, VFS and the €877.50 monthly threshold apply to everyone. The 2006 agreement, supplemented in 2008, mainly provides a recommendation for university residence housing for certain categories (scholarship holders in particular) and residence facilities for Senegalese government scholarship holders. For after graduation, it creates no automatic right.
