How many people from Iceland live abroad?
According to the United Nations, 20,100 people from Iceland live abroad.
However, the figure counts migrants, not their children born abroad. The real diaspora is therefore larger.
🇮🇸 Iceland
Iceland diaspora around the world
People from Iceland around the world meet here, country by country and city by city. Settled, about to leave or simply connected: here is where to find your people.
Iceland diaspora, by continent
Main countries of residence
According to the United Nations, from largest to smallest.
Where people from Iceland live
8,870 people from Iceland live in Denmark, 8,660 Norway, and 2,550 Poland.
Together, these three countries therefore account for about 100% of the diaspora.
Each country has its own page, with the cities, communities and meetups there.
Neighbouring diasporas
Other countries in Europe also have their diaspora on Compatri: Ukraine, Russia, United Kingdom, Romania, and Poland. Each page gathers its countries of residence, its cities and its national day.
Finding people from Iceland near you
Compatri brings diasporas together where they live. First, you choose the community of your city. Then you discover what its members organise: meals, parties, afterworks or mutual aid. Finally, you message compatriots who share your interests.
You can also host your own meetup: a meal, an outing or a party. It then appears to members of your city, and you follow sign-ups from your account.
Your exact location never appears: other members only see an approximate area. In addition, joining a community and attending events costs nothing.
Icelandic National Day
Every June 17, the national day brings the Iceland diaspora together. Wherever the diaspora lives, communities also organise concerts, meals and gatherings.
