In Algeria, no Campus France file goes anywhere without a French certificate. The TCF (Test de connaissance du français) for Campus France Algeria, or its DELF or DALF equivalent, opens the procedure: without at least B1, you cannot even apply. Campus France is the French public agency for international students. This article answers the practical questions: which test for which programme, where to take it, what it costs, what level to aim for, who is exempt, and how to fit it in before the deadlines of the 2027 campaign. For the whole procedure, see our Campus France Algeria guide.

Which test for which procedure in Algeria

The Institut français d'Algérie (IFA, the French cultural institute in Algeria), an exam centre approved by France Éducation international, offers the certificates that Campus France Algeria recognises. The right choice depends on your route. The DAP (demande d'admission préalable) is the prior admission request for a first year of licence (bachelor's).

Your projectAccepted certificatesCampus France Algeria requirement
Licence 1 or architecture (DAP)TCF DAP, TCF tout public with written test, DELF B2, DALF C1 or C2Certificate mandatory
Licence 2 and 3, master's, schools (non-DAP)TCF tout public, TCF DAP, TCF with written test, DELF, DALFPass certificate of at least B1 at submission
CPGE, BTS, DCG via ParcoursupTCF DAP, TCF tout public, TCF with written tests, DELF, DALFCertificate mandatory
Programme from the « Taught in English » catalogueNone, unless the institution requires itRequired for LEA, LCE and LCER (language degrees)

In practice, the « TCF DAP » is the TCF with a written expression test. For licence 1, ask for that version, or add the written test to a TCF tout public. If you are unsure which route applies, read DAP or non-DAP: which procedure.

Where to take the TCF in Algeria

The IFA holds sessions every month in its five branches: Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba and Tlemcen. In Algiers, the TCF takes place in an off-site centre in Oued Smar, run with VFS Global, which hosts the TCF DAP, the TCF tout public and the TCF Canada.

The registration method often surprises people: everything happens online.

1Online registration only, on the IFA registration platform run by VFS Global, reachable from the TCF page of the IFA website. No appointments are made on site.
2ID: biometric ID card or passport for Algerian applicants; biometric passport or consular card for foreigners.
3Gap between two registrations: the IFA requires 26 days between two TCF registrations. A failed attempt in November cannot be made up in two weeks. Register early, and never aim for the last session before your Campus France deadline.
4Additional tests only (written or oral expression): you register without VFS, at the branch, provided you hold a TCF tout public still valid for more than six months.
5Help: VFS Global answers registration questions at info.tcfalg@vfshelpline.com.

DELF and DALF follow a different rhythm, with set sessions during the year and per branch. Each branch publishes its DELF DALF calendar on the IFA website; check the one for your city.

TCF price for Campus France in Algeria

The IFA website shows only one price clearly: 16,000 DA (Algerian dinars) for the DALF C1 or C2. For the TCF, the price appears when you register on the VFS platform, and we found no published official price list.

CertificatePriceStatus
DALF C1 or C216,000 DAShown on the IFA website
TCF tout public12,400 DARate announced by the IFA in January 2024, to be checked
TCF DAP19,000 DARate announced by the IFA in January 2024, to be checked
Campus France application fee20,000 DZDOfficial 2027 calendar

The two TCF rows use the amounts the IFA announced in January 2024, reported at the time by the Algerian press. They may have changed: rely on the amount shown at payment. Above all, remember that the test and the Campus France fee add up: one never replaces the other. Also budget for a possible second attempt.

What level to aim for

Campus France Algeria sets two thresholds, and you need to tell them apart.

  • B1, the minimum to apply. Below that, the procedure is closed to you.
  • B2, the level most institutions expect. A B1 lets you submit, but rarely gets you admitted.
  • C1, strongly recommended in the humanities, where writing weighs most.

A good score works twice. It reassures the committee reading your file, and it prepares you for the Campus France interview, where the adviser also assesses your spoken French. Aim higher than the minimum: classes in France will not slow down for you.

Validity: the trap of a TCF taken too early

All TCFs are valid for two years. DELF and DALF are yours for life. But Campus France Algeria adds a decisive rule: the certificate must remain valid until your administrative enrolment at the host institution, in September 2027 for most programmes.

In practice, a TCF taken in August 2025 expires in August 2027, before the start of the year: you would have to retake it. A TCF taken in October 2026 covers the whole campaign. If you plan to apply over two successive campaigns, a DELF B2 or DALF spares you that race.

As for the result, the TCF tout public gives a provisional certificate at the end of the exam, then the final certificate arrives by email about fifteen days later. Since March 2023, the IFA no longer issues paper certificates.

Fitting the test in before the 2027 deadlines

1Non-DAP, file to submit by 30 November 2026: take the TCF in October or at the very start of November. Campus France Algeria refuses a mere exam notice at submission.
2DAP, file by 15 December 2026: the certificate is part of the file; a TCF taken in October or November leaves time for a second attempt.
3Keep the 26-day margin: if your score falls short, you can only register again after that period.

All the other deadlines, from interview to visa, are in the Campus France Algeria calendar 2027.

Who is exempt from the test

The grid published by Campus France Algeria for the 2026 campaign lists the profiles exempt from the French test. The Algerian baccalauréat is not among them.

ProfileFrench test
Algerian baccalauréat, Algerian licence or master'sRequired
Holder of a French baccalauréat, however oldNot required
Programme from the « Taught in English » catalogueNot required, unless the institution requires it
National of a country where French is an official language, or secondary studies entirely in FrenchNot required
ESAA graduateNot required
Scholarship holder of a French institution, inter-university exchangeNot required

The general rules on exemptions, country by country, are in our article on the Campus France French test.

Preparing without paying for classes

The IFA offers French classes and an online TCF preparation workshop, focused on written and oral expression, which is valuable for the DAP version. Its media libraries also hold documents for on-site consultation. For free practice, the IFA recommends three resources: the TV5Monde TCF simulation, the diplomas and tests section of RFI Français facile, and the France Éducation international pages.

Revising with those who took it last year

The TCF is easier to prepare together: you correct each other's writing, practise speaking and share feedback on the Algiers or Oran sessions. On Compatri, the page of the Algerian diaspora gathers Algerian communities city by city, in France and elsewhere; students who took the TCF last year now live there, in the city where you plan to study. Joining a community is free, even before you leave: see join your community before you leave. The group « Étudiants africains » (African students) also brings together students from several countries around scholarships and mutual help.

Compatri runs no classes or tests, is not a service of Campus France or the State, and does not replace the official source: for registration and results, only the IFA and Campus France Algeria are authoritative.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you take the TCF for Campus France in Algeria?

In the five branches of the Institut français d'Algérie: Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba and Tlemcen, with sessions every month. In Algiers, the TCF takes place at the Oued Smar off-site centre, run with VFS Global. Registration is online only, on the platform reachable from the TCF page of the IFA website.

How much does the TCF cost in Algeria?

The IFA does not publish a clear TCF price list: the price appears when you register on the VFS platform. The last rates announced by the IFA, in January 2024, were 12,400 DA for the TCF tout public and 19,000 DA for the TCF DAP, to be checked. The DALF C1 or C2 costs 16,000 DA according to the IFA website.

What TCF level for Campus France Algeria?

You need at least B1 to apply, proven by a pass certificate at the time of submission. Most institutions expect B2, and C1 is strongly recommended in the humanities. Aiming for B2 at the first attempt saves you from retaking the test in the middle of the campaign.

How long is the TCF valid for Campus France?

Two years, for every version of the TCF; the DELF and DALF remain valid for life. Campus France Algeria also requires the certificate to cover the whole procedure, up to administrative enrolment in France. A TCF taken in August 2025 therefore expires before the 2027 intake.

Does the Algerian baccalauréat exempt you from the TCF?

No. According to the Campus France Algeria grid, exemptions apply notably to holders of a French baccalauréat, applicants to a programme from the « Taught in English » catalogue and those whose secondary studies were entirely in French. An applicant with an Algerian baccalauréat must present a TCF, DELF or DALF.
