Studying in Switzerland from Africa is possible, but more selective and more expensive than in France or Belgium. For a first degree, called a bachelor in Switzerland, the universities of Geneva and Neuchâtel ask most African baccalauréat holders for an average of at least 12/20 and a pass in an entrance exam, the ECUS. An applicant who needs a visa often has to file before 28 February. You then have to prove roughly 2,000 to 2,500 Swiss francs (CHF) of resources per month to obtain the residence permit. Here is each step, with the official figures. To compare with other countries, start with our comparison for studying in Europe from Africa.
Universities, EPF, HES: where to study in Switzerland?
The "Hautes écoles 2025" report of the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SEFRI, SERI in English) describes three families of institutions:
- ten cantonal universities, including, in French-speaking Switzerland, Geneva (UNIGE), Lausanne (UNIL), Neuchâtel (UniNE) and Fribourg, a bilingual French-German university;
- two federal institutes of technology (EPF, écoles polytechniques fédérales): EPFL in Lausanne and ETH in Zurich;
- nine cantonal universities of applied sciences (HES, hautes écoles spécialisées), more practice-oriented, and nineteen universities of teacher education (HEP, hautes écoles pédagogiques).
There is no shared platform like Études en France (the French online application platform). You apply on the portal of each institution, which sets its own conditions, dates and fees.
Procedure for studying in Switzerland with an African baccalauréat
A foreign baccalauréat does not open the doors of a Swiss university by itself. UNIGE and UniNE publish a list by country each year, based on the recommendations of swissuniversities, the rectors' conference. Here is what they require for the 2026-2027 academic year:
| Country of the baccalauréat | UNIGE | UniNE |
|---|---|---|
| Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon (French-speaking system), Ivory Coast, Guinea, Senegal, Togo | 12/20 + ECUS | 12/20 + study place at home + ECUS |
| Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria | 12/20 + ECUS | 12/20 + study place at home + ECUS |
| Gabon | 12/20 + ECUS | 12/20 + ECUS |
| Mali | First recognised university degree + French exam | University degree equivalent to a Swiss bachelor + French B2 |
| Cameroon (English-speaking system) | First recognised university degree + French exam | To be checked with UniNE |
Three details matter:
- only some streams are recognised. At UNIGE, a Burkinabe baccalauréat obtained since 2021 must be in stream C or D; a Beninese one, in streams A1, A2, B, C or D;
- UniNE's "place d'études" (study place) is a certificate of admission to a university in your country, in the same field as the one you apply for in Neuchâtel;
- without the required average, one route remains: a first university degree obtained at a recognised university and programme. UNIGE also accepts two successful years (120 ECTS credits) in a country that has signed the Lisbon Convention; UniNE requires a three-year degree (180 ECTS).
These lists change every year: UNIGE publishes its own in January for the September intake.
The ECUS, the exam that makes the difference
The Examen complémentaire des hautes écoles suisses (ECUS, supplementary exam of Swiss higher education institutions) is for applicants whose diploma is not considered equivalent to the Swiss maturité (upper secondary leaving certificate). It has four compulsory subjects (French, mathematics, English, history with an introduction to law) and one option among physics, chemistry, biology or geography with an introduction to economics. In science and medicine, the option must be physics, chemistry or biology.
For 2026-2027, UNIGE states a registration fee of CHF 1,050 and exams in August. Passing it is a condition of entry, and a second failure is final.
The case of EPFL
EPFL works differently. For a diploma from outside the European Union, it offers the Cours de mathématiques spéciales (CMS, special mathematics course), a preparatory year open depending on places and under strict conditions: at least 80% of the maximum in mathematics, in physics and as a general average. If your country is not on it, EPFL's entrance exam remains, open with no conditions and no cap on places.
Deadlines: often 28 February
The date depends on the institution and on whether you need a visa:
- UNIGE: for the 2026 intake, the campaign opened on 15 January, and the deadline was 28 February 2026 for applicants subject to the ECUS or to a visa, and 30 April for the others. The 2027-2028 conditions will be published in January 2027;
- UNIL: its directive sets 28 February for applicants who must obtain a study visa, for bachelor's and master's alike, and 30 April for the others;
- UniNE: 30 April for most bachelor's programmes, but the university asks foreign applicants to send their file at least one month earlier, because the visa and the legalisation of diplomas take several months;
- EPFL: applications from mid-November to 30 April, for a September start.
In medicine, UNIGE also requires registration with swissuniversities before 15 February.
Language: French at B2 level
UNIGE requires a B2 level in French. Without proof, you sit its French exam (CHF 100), on the Monday of the 36th week of the year for the autumn intake. Those exempt include:
- holders of a secondary school leaving diploma whose official language of instruction is French, which covers a large share of baccalauréats from French-speaking Africa;
- holders of the DELF B2 (60 points, of which 15 in written production), the DALF C1 or C2, the TCF or TCF DAP at B2 level with the written test, or the TEF B2, obtained within the four years before the start of the academic year.
UniNE asks for a B2 certificate when your diploma was not taught in French. EPFL requires B2 and strongly recommends C1. If your Moroccan, Tunisian or Algerian baccalauréat was taken in another language, plan for a test: our article on the Campus France French test compares the TCF and the TEF, which Geneva also recognises.
Fees: how much does a Swiss university cost?
Fees remain modest compared with the cost of living, except at EPFL:
| Institution | Fees per semester | Application fee (foreign diploma) |
|---|---|---|
| UNIGE | CHF 500, whatever your nationality | CHF 65 if required |
| UNIL | CHF 580 (500 for courses, 80 of semester fees) | CHF 200 |
| UniNE | CHF 790 for a foreign student whose parents live abroad (CHF 515 otherwise) | CHF 100, deducted from fees if you are admitted |
| EPFL | CHF 2,240 for a foreign student who came to Switzerland to study, since autumn 2025 (CHF 780 otherwise) | CHF 150 |
Swiss student visa: visa D, then a cantonal permit
The student visa for Switzerland comes in two stages. You file an application for a national visa D at the Swiss representation in your country. The migration office of the canton where you will study then decides.
- When to file: at the latest three months before classes start, according to the Swiss embassy in Cameroon; three months before, and as early as possible, according to the one in Senegal.
- Processing time: about 8 to 12 weeks according to the embassies in Cameroon and Senegal, which point out that it varies a lot by canton.
- Fees: the Swiss embassy in Senegal's list states that visa applications for studies are exempt from visa fees. The canton's administrative fees come next: Fribourg announces CHF 95 to 130.
- Usual documents, according to the procedure of the embassy in Yaoundé: visa D form, passport, photos, admission certificate, proof of payment of tuition, proof of financial means, detailed CV, diplomas, study plan with the target degree and duration, handwritten motivation letter and a letter committing to leave Switzerland at the end of your studies. The embassy may also check your language skills.
A tourist visa does not allow you to study in Switzerland. Once there, the residence permit is renewed every year, with fresh proof of resources.
Required financial means, canton by canton
No single amount applies to the whole of Switzerland: the embassy in Cameroon refers applicants to the migration office of their future canton. The published figures:
| Canton | Required amount | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Geneva | CHF 20,000 for one year, or an income of CHF 2,500 per month | A guarantor must cover CHF 2,500 per month; a guarantor abroad is only accepted if it is your father, mother, brother or sister |
| Vaud (UNIL, EPFL) | CHF 2,000 per month | Usually requested for a full academic year, according to EPFL |
| Fribourg | CHF 21,900 for one year (CHF 10,950 per semester) | Statement from a Swiss bank or from a bank in your country with a presence in Switzerland, account in your name |
Working while studying in Switzerland
Work is allowed, but regulated. According to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM), a student from outside the European Union may work at most 15 hours a week during term, and no earlier than six months after the start of their course. The university must confirm that this work does not delay the studies, and the employer files the application. In Geneva, the limit rises to 40 hours a week during holidays, and you must wait for the cantonal office's decision before starting. After graduating, you have six months to look for a job that matches your qualification.
Fifteen hours a week will not fund a Swiss budget: it is a top-up, never the basis of your plan.
Cost of living: the real obstacle
Let us be clear: living in Switzerland is very expensive. The institutions' estimates:
- Geneva: UNIGE's law faculty gives an indicative budget of CHF 1,924 to 2,039 per month under 25, and CHF 1,949 to 2,214 after that. It counts a rent of CHF 600, while the same page reports a housing vacancy rate of 0.24% and a "grave crise du logement" (severe housing crisis);
- Lausanne: EPFL estimates a foreign student's expenses at CHF 2,107 per month, with CHF 900 for housing, and advises planning about CHF 29,000 per year, on top of fees.
Add health insurance, compulsory within three months of arrival. The Federal Office of Public Health allows students from outside the European Union to be exempted if they have private insurance with equivalent cover, for three years renewable once. Start your search early: our guide to finding student housing from abroad explains the method.
The timeline: step, when, cost
| Step | When | Indicative cost |
|---|---|---|
| Check the conditions for your country and stream | As soon as the lists are published, in January | Free |
| Obtain a B2 if your baccalauréat was not in French | Before applying | Depends on the test centre; UNIGE exam CHF 100 |
| Apply | Before 28 February (UNIGE, UNIL, if visa); 30 April (UniNE, one month earlier advised; EPFL) | CHF 65 to 200 depending on the university |
| Sit the ECUS if required | August | CHF 1,050 (2026-2027) |
| File the visa D application | At least three months before the start of the year | Study visa exempt (Senegal); permit CHF 95 to 130 (Fribourg) |
| Pay the first semester | At enrolment | CHF 500 to 2,240 |
| Live there | Every month | About CHF 1,900 to 2,200 |
The timeline gets tight at one point: the ECUS takes place in August, while the visa must be requested three months before the start of the year. Ask the university for the exact order of the steps as soon as you are called to the ECUS.
Switzerland or France?
If you are hesitating, compare honestly. France requires less monthly income and uses a single procedure, Campus France (the French agency for international students), detailed in our complete Campus France guide. Our free Campus France simulator positions your file against admitted applicants. For Belgium, see our guide to studying in Belgium from Africa, and, if you come from the Maghreb, our article on studying in Belgium for North Africans. Compatri does not support applications to Switzerland: for a specific case, contact the university concerned or the canton's migration office.
Those who already live in Geneva or Lausanne know the canton's real processing time and the neighbourhoods to live in. On Compatri, you find them through the page on diasporas in Switzerland, for example Cameroonians in Switzerland or Moroccans in Switzerland, and you can join your community before you leave. Frequently asked questions
What average do you need to study in Switzerland with an African baccalauréat?
For 2026-2027, the University of Geneva asks for 12/20 and a pass in the ECUS for baccalauréats from Benin, Burkina Faso, French-speaking Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Guinea, Senegal, Togo, Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. The University of Neuchâtel usually adds a certificate of admission to a university in your country. For a Malian baccalauréat, you first need a recognised university degree.
What is the deadline to apply to a Swiss university?
For an applicant who needs a visa, it is often 28 February: UNIL sets it by directive, and UNIGE applied it for the 2026 intake to applicants subject to a visa or to the ECUS. The University of Neuchâtel and EPFL close on 30 April, but Neuchâtel advises foreign applicants to send their file one month earlier.
How much money do you need to prove for a Swiss student visa?
The amount depends on the canton. Geneva asks for CHF 20,000 for one year, or an income of CHF 2,500 per month. In the canton of Vaud, EPFL states CHF 2,000 per month, usually for a full year. Fribourg asks for CHF 21,900 per academic year. Check with the migration office of your future canton.
Can an African student work while studying in Switzerland?
Yes, at most 15 hours a week during term and no earlier than six months after the start of the course, according to the State Secretariat for Migration. The employer files the application and the university confirms that the studies do not suffer. In Geneva, the limit rises to 40 hours a week during holidays.
How much does a year of study in Switzerland cost?
Fees range from CHF 500 per semester at UNIGE to CHF 2,240 at EPFL for a foreign student who came to study. The cost of living weighs far more: UNIGE gives an indicative budget of about CHF 1,900 to 2,200 per month in Geneva, and EPFL advises planning about CHF 29,000 per year for living costs, on top of fees.
Can Compatri support my application to Switzerland?
No. Compatri does not support applications to Switzerland: for a specific case, contact the university concerned or the canton's migration office. Compatri does, however, let you find compatriots who already live in Switzerland and join their community before you leave.
