According to Lyon Campus, the student portal of the Lyon Saint-Étienne university site, around 24,000 international students have chosen Lyon. Many come from Africa, drawn by its universities, its engineering schools and a life said to be cheaper than in Paris. Cheaper, not cheap: the 2025 ranking by UNEF (a French student union) puts Lyon 10th among France's most expensive university cities. This guide gathers what is specific to Lyon: where people study, who welcomes you on arrival, how to find housing and get around, what the year costs, what winter is like and where the African diasporas meet. For everything before departure (Études en France, the interview, the visa), the starting point remains our complete guide to the Campus France procedure.

Universities and grandes écoles in Lyon

Lyon and Saint-Étienne form a single university site, federated by the Université de Lyon (now the ComUE Lyon Saint-Étienne, a grouping of institutions). Three public universities take in most of Lyon's students. Note straight away that "Lyon 1, Lyon 2, Lyon 3" are not levels of study: they are three separate universities, with different disciplines.

UniversityMain fieldsCampus to know
Claude-Bernard Lyon 1sciences, health, sportLa Doua (Villeurbanne)
Lumière Lyon 2arts, languages, humanities and social sciences, law, economics and managementBerges du Rhône, Porte des Alpes (Bron)
Jean-Moulin Lyon 3law, management, languages, literature, philosophyManufacture des Tabacs (Lyon 8th)

Added to these are the Université Jean-Monnet in Saint-Étienne and a set of member or associated schools of the site: INSA Lyon, ENS de Lyon, École centrale de Lyon, Sciences Po Lyon, VetAgro Sup, ENTPE, the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Lyon, CPE Lyon, emlyon business school and the Université catholique de Lyon.

One name comes up constantly: La Doua. This campus in Villeurbanne, a town adjoining Lyon, brings together Lyon 1, INSA, CPE Lyon and Polytech Lyon among others, and is served by tram lines T1, T4 and T6. Before applying, check on the Campus France website for your country whether your chosen programme goes through the Études en France platform: the rules vary by country and type of institution.

Students Welcome Desk: the welcome for international students in Lyon

This is the first number to save in your phone. The Students Welcome Desk is the welcome desk for international students on the Lyon Saint-Étienne site, run by the Université de Lyon. In 2026 it operates from 24 August to 18 December and moves around the campuses.

  • Multilingual hotline: +33 (0)4 37 37 43 00, 10 am to 5 pm without a break.
  • In-person desk: by appointment only.
  • Contact: swd@universite-lyon.fr, and the portal universite-lyon.fr/swd.
  • What it handles: administrative procedures, especially those for the student residence permit (titre de séjour), access to your rights, health, housing and transport.

The Desk also runs "Meet & Greet" events, festive, cultural or informative gatherings, during the day or after work. In the first weeks, it is an easy way to meet people without having to invent everything yourself. In Saint-Étienne, a similar welcome service has been run by the Université Jean-Monnet since 1 September 2026.

Your institution also has its own international relations office. At Lyon 3, for example, a multilingual one-stop welcome desk receives international students all year round on the Manufacture des Tabacs campus. Two steps remain yours, whatever the desk: validating your VLS-TS (the long-stay visa that serves as a residence permit) online on the ANEF website (the French online immigration portal) within three months of arrival, and registering with French health insurance on etudiant-etranger.ameli.fr.

Student housing in Lyon: CROUS, residences and neighbourhoods

The Crous de Lyon (the regional student services agency) manages 8,560 places in 40 university residences, spread across Lyon, Saint-Étienne, Roanne and Bourg-en-Bresse. Applications go through the Dossier social étudiant (DSE, the student social file), with several rounds of choices in spring; a complementary phase opened on 7 July 2026 for the remaining places. In your first year, also look at the Résidence pour la Réussite: reduced rent in exchange for taking part in a tutoring programme for new students.

There are not enough places for everyone, and many students turn to the private market. According to UNEF's 2025 ranking, the average rent paid by a student in the private sector in Lyon reaches €623 a month, up 4.18% in a year.

To choose a neighbourhood, think in travel time to your campus rather than reputation:

  • Villeurbanne, around La Doua, for Lyon 1, INSA and CPE Lyon;
  • the 7th and 8th arrondissements, for the Berges du Rhône (Lyon 2) and the Manufacture des Tabacs (Lyon 3);
  • Bron, for the Porte des Alpes campus (Lyon 2).

A place a little further away but on a direct tram line is often better than a nearby one with poor connections. From abroad, never pay money for accommodation nobody has seen: it is the most common scam pattern. How to search remotely is explained in our article on finding student housing from abroad. Bear in mind a recent change too: since 1 July 2026, non-EU students who do not hold a bourse sur critères sociaux (a means-tested grant) are no longer entitled to the APL (French housing benefit), with exceptions (apprentices, students with a professional activity).

Getting around Lyon: TCL passes for students

The TCL network (metro, tram, bus, funiculars) covers the metropolitan area. The fares in force from 1 September 2026 include several options that directly concern international students:

SituationPassPrice
Residence permit applicant, under conditionsSolidaire Gratuit€0
Student on a grantSolidaire Réduit Boursier€11 a month
Student aged 26 or 27Étudiants 26-27 ans, zones 1 and 2€26 a month
Young person aged 18 to 2518-25 ansreduced fare, see tcl.fr

The Solidaire Gratuit pass is reserved for residents of the towns in zones 1 to 5, on supporting documents, and entitlement for residence permit applicants is renewed every six months. The Université de Lyon's student aid website explicitly points this out to international students applying for a residence permit: ask as soon as you arrive, before buying a paid pass. Another useful detail: the student pass for 26-27-year-olds, for example, includes 45 free minutes per trip on Vélo'v, Lyon's bike-share scheme.

Cost of living in Lyon and winter: plan generously

The budget for a year in Lyon

BenchmarkAmountSource
Average monthly cost of student life€1,323.98UNEF, 2025 ranking
Average private-sector rent€623UNEF, 2025 ranking
Minimum resources required for the visa€877.50 a monthdecree of 22 June 2026
TCL pass for grant holders€11 a monthTCL

The €877.50 figure is what the consulate asks you to prove, not what Lyon costs. The gap with UNEF's estimate is close to €450 a month: it has to be filled with savings, family support, a grant or a part-time job (the student VLS-TS allows 964 hours of work a year). The resources rule is explained in detail in our article on the minimum resources for a student visa.

Winter in Lyon

Lyon is no polar city, but winter surprises people arriving from West or Central Africa. According to the 1991-2020 climate normals for the Lyon-Bron station, January averages 1.1 °C at the coldest point of the day and 7.1 °C at the warmest; December and February are hardly milder. A few habits:

  • buy a proper coat, gloves and a hat in November, without waiting for the first cold snap;
  • before signing a lease, ask whether heating is collective (included in the service charges) or individual (on your electricity bill);
  • the days shorten quickly: keep regular outings and appointments, and talk to your university's health service if your spirits drop.

Where the African diaspora meets in Lyon

The most visible place is la Guillotière, in the 7th arrondissement. The Grande rue de la Guillotière is lined with shops selling African produce (attiéké, plantain, saka-saka), Afro hair salons, restaurants and clothing shops. Between la Guillotière and avenue Jean-Jaurès, West African maquis (informal restaurants) serve mafé, yassa chicken and alloco; a report by the local magazine Petit Bulletin described places frequented notably by Ivorians, Cameroonians and Senegalese, where people gather for football matches. The neighbourhood is cosmopolitan, with Asian and North African shops too: it is a place to shop and eat, not the only place where Lyon's Africans live, since they are settled all over the metropolitan area.

For students, the student association directory on Lyon Campus has an "Accueil des étudiants internationaux" (international student welcome) filter and a keyword search. There you will find, for example, the Association des étudiants et jeunes Camerounais de Lyon (AEJC Lyon), which organises welcome evenings for newcomers at the start of the academic year. To find your own country's association, here or elsewhere, follow the method in our guide to African student associations in France.

Don't arrive in Lyon alone

The hardest part of the first weeks is not the paperwork: it is knowing no one. On Compatri, the basic unit is the community, a country of origin crossed with a city: "Cameroonians in Lyon", "Senegalese in Lyon", "Ivorians in Lyon".

  • The Compatri in Lyon page shows the communities present in the city and upcoming meetups.
  • Each diaspora has its own page, for example the Cameroonian diaspora, which lists its communities city by city.
  • You can join the Lyon community before you leave, free of charge; some require a moderator's approval.
  • The "Étudiants africains" group, shared by all cities, covers grants, degree equivalences, student housing and support between campuses.
  • Meetups are created by members; some come from public agendas and carry the "Agenda public" label.

If your country does not yet have a community in Lyon, it will start with its first members living there: the Claim your city page explains how people who have lived there for at least two years become its reference members. Why to do it before leaving, and how: that is the subject of our article on joining your community before you leave. Compatri is neither a visa agency nor a housing service: for procedures, the official services below are the reference.
